Galapagos National Park World Heritage Site
The Country of Ecuador - In 1978 the Galapagos National Park was inscribed as a World Heritage site and in 1984 the islands became an UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. In 2001, UNESCO extended the Galapagos World Heritage status to include the marine reserve of 43,500 square miles of ocean surrounding the islands.
However, due to excessive tourism, an increase in population and the arrival of non-native species, among other causes, UNESCO decided to add the archipelago to its World Heritage in Danger list in 2007.
