Bahia de Caraquez Ecuador
-
Bahia de
Caraquez
became
an Ecocity on February 23, 1999 due to the
devastation caused by two natural disasters in
1997 and 1998: the "El Niño" phenomenon and an
earthquake in august of the later year. Due to
the high magnitude of destruction, Bahía had
to completely reconstruct itself. Funding and
consulting between Japanese organization
ACTMANG, Fundación Stuarium and other public
and private organizations in Bahía, the city
was reconstructed in an ecological manner. The
governing authorities of the District of Sucre
made the Official Declaration and since then
Bahía de Caráquez has been planning it´s
development within the sustainable principals
of an Ecocity.
The city of Bahía de Caráquez is located in a sandy
peninsula in the western coast of Ecuador. It
has shown an important development during the
last 15 to 20 years, since it has become one
of the country's most attractive resort areas
due to its beauty and relative closeness to
the cities of Quito and Guayaquil, the two
biggest cities in the country. It takes some
five hours to reach Bahía by car from Quito
and four hours from Guayaquil.

At present
the population of Bahía may be estimated in
30.000 people located on the urban area and
its surroundings. This population is
substantially increased during the summer, due
to the tourist affluence. In fact, August is
usually a very busy time for the zone.
The peninsula
is elongated to the N-NW direction and its
coastal line has suffered important changes
during the last 50 years. Those lands have
been used later for developing the modern part
of the city.
The most
recent construction in Bahía correspond to 6
to 12 story apartment buildings with modern
architectural designs. Long spans, big windows
and balconies, free stories to allow the
location of swimming pools.
La Piedra
Hotel offers 42 spacious and
comfortable rooms with air conditioning and
cable television. The architecture is
traditional in wood with art nouveau features,
which gives it a good taste of the past. This
is a cozy and comfortable place, in front of
the sea, with grassy areas, a pool, volleyball
court, restaurant and bar.
Ubicada en la
parte central de la Costa del Pacífico, Manabí
ofrece hermosas playas, encantadores pueblos
